Five Generations

The other day when I was taking the train into Boston I had a chance to have a brief conversation with a crewman who was deadheading into work. He told me he was a mechanic and worked on the locomotives. I told him that my great-grandfather did the same thing -- albeit in the early 1900s and at Readville. He said he was a fifth generation railroader. His family started out working for the Old Colony. The Old Colony got swallowed up by the New Haven in the 1890s. Pretty impressive as far as I am concerned.
Unfortuantely, we pulled into South Station before I got around to asking him anything else. But, I am hopeful I will get to see him again one of these days.
