There is a spot on Francis Street in downtown Providence where you can catch a glimpse of the tracks coming out of Providence station and then passing under the mall and Interstate 95. The neat thing about this spot is that while the tracks are doing all of that they are also passing over the Providence River on a bridge.

I took this earlier this year, but the guys at Railpace were nice enough to say they would use it, so I didn't post it until it ran in the magazine. |
If you go down yourself to try it, the best time to go is in the morning because that is when the sun is on the tracks there. In the afternoon the sun is on the other side of the buildings and its shadow time. I like parking on the street that runs between the station and the State House. I have never had trouble finding a space there. It also gives me an excuse to stop in at the station and check out it out. The interior of Providence station is a little gloomy and cave like, but it's a train station and that's always a good thing. Finally, the other thing this spot has going for it is that 95 percent of the trains that run through here are passenger trains, so all you need is a schedule and you know when you have to arrive to get your shot! By the way, for your freight fans, the Providence and Worcester does run a freight through here early in the monring Monday through Friday.
If anyone tries this shot themselves, I would love to see the results. Email me!
