Nine: Louisiana

Heading North
Pointe Coupe Parish, Louisiana between Morganza and New Roads. There was a heck of a flood fight going on just north of here. The Army Corps of Engineers was opening the Morganza Spillway to divert a chunk of the Mississippi River away from Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The Morganza is a 3,900-foot, dam-like structure that carries both the Kansas City Southern and Louisiana Highway 1 over it. When they open the gates to let the water flow through they had to stop all traffic and that meant at least one Kansas City Southern freight had to idle away the afternoon. I took this on my way back to Baton Rouge.
